Silicon Valley is located in San Francisco, California, USA. In the early 1950s, Stanford University set up a research institute there and soon after a metering factory relocated. In 1955, Shockley, the inventor of the transistor, set up a semiconductor company there. Two years later, eight of his technical staff went out and founded Fairchild Semiconductor, now the second-largest semiconductor maker in the United States. The company invented the flat integrated circuit technology, marking the era of electronic technology into the microelectronics. In 1967, Neuss and Moore separated from Fairchild and founded Intel
