Alternant oxidase (AOX) is a terminal oxidase of the plant’s mitochondrial cyanide respiration pathway. This study showed that AOX and its mediated cyanide-resistant respiration rose rapidly after water absorption of tomato seeds and reached a peak on the third day. When treated with AOX inhibitor, tomato seeds germinated slowly, respiration was weakened, ethylene release decreased, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) increased. In addition, the application of ethylene can also promote the germination of tomato seeds, but can not promote the AOX inhibited seed germination, indicating ethylene induced seed germination depends on the expression of AOX. Therefore, we speculated that AOX played a key role in the germination of tomato seeds and was related to the regulation of ROS metabolism and ethylene.
