法国的幼儿学校叫作“母育学校”。法国最早的幼儿学校是“编织学校”,它是农忙季节收容幼儿的机构。由于管理幼儿的人员一面搞副业生产,进行编织;一面教幼儿唱歌和组织他们游戏,所以称之为“编织学校”(幼儿并不学习编织,这纯属管理儿童的学校)。1825年在巴黎又成立收容孤儿的学校,叫“收容所”,它是城市的慈善机构。1881年政府才办“母育学校”,规定不管公立的还是私立的母育学校,一律由教育部管辖。从此,
