However, the energy friction between Russia and Belarus over the New Year has not made the New Year, the most important political event of the two countries, a happy one. Just two minutes away from the New Year’s bell in 2007, Russia and Belarus finally agreed on export prices for natural gas in 2007, thus avoiding a repeat of the “natural gas wars” of Russia and Ukraine a year ago and of relieving the EU. However, the natural gas dispute was flat and the “oil tax battle” started again. January 9 is the first working day after the Orthodox Church New Year but Belarusian Deputy Prime Minister Kobyakov had to fly to Moscow to negotiate with Russia on oil tariffs. On the evening of January 10, local time, Belarus announced that it would deliver oil to Europe via Belarus
