Literal Meaning: a dream about the place called Nanke
Metaphorical Meaning: It is used to describe something as a mare’s nest.
At the beginning of the Tang Dynasty (618 – 907 AD), there was a man named Chunyu Zun in Guangling. There was a big tree in his yard, which lent a big place for shade in summer.
When Chunyu Zun held his birthday party at home, where many guests were present. Too glad to control himself, Chunyu Zun took too much wine and got drunk. When the party was over, his friends and relatives all left, leaving him sitting under the big tree in the yard and soon was overwhelmed with sleep.
In his dream he arrived in a country named Dahuaian where a test for choosing candidates for state officials was held. Chunyu Zun signed up and finished the test with the best scores. Following the test was the review made by the emperor, who was impressed by Chunyu Zun’s handsomeness and talents. He titled him as the “No. 1 Scholar” and betrothed the princess to him. The story of him soon became a good tale in the capital and every people admired him very much.
After marrying the princess, Chunyu Zun enjoyed a happy marital life. Then he was appointed the procurator of a place named Nanjun. During his 20 years’ tenure there, Chunyu Zun made intensive rounds in the different countries under his reign and took strict orders for his underlings, who respected him very much and dared not do anything illegal. Under his reign the place of Nanjun went fast development and the people there lived a happy life. The emperor wanted to move him back to the capital for several times to no avail due to the local people’s detention. The emperor was cheered up by Chunyu Zun’s achievements and awarded him with a pile of gold and treasure.
One year, the neighboring country invaded Dahuaian and defeated its army for several times at the borderline. The failure came to the capital and scared the emperor very much. He summoned his ministers and generals to think of a way to defeat the enemies. However, no one can figure a feasible idea and most of them were frightened by the approaching enemies.
The emperor was very angry at seeing his men’s uselessness. He said: “At peace times you enjoyed your happy lives which the country gave to you. When the country was in trouble, you have no ideas of how to save it?”
The prime minister recommended appointing the emperor’s son-in-law Chunyu Zun as the general and led the main power of the country to counter the invaders.
Chunyu Zun took the reign of the army soon after getting the order. However, he knew nothing about the martial tactics and was soon defeated by the enemies. A lot of soldiers were killed and Chunyu Zun himself nearly got captivated. The emperor was angered by his failure. He removed his post and sent him behind the bar. Chunyu Zun made out a shout out of the indigence and then woke up. He immediately found taht the good and bad things only happened in his dreams.
