“扬州八怪”之一的郑燮有一首《墨竹图题诗》:衙斋卧听萧萧竹,疑是民间疾苦声。些小吾曹州县吏,一枝一叶总关情。诗的前一句描写了当时的凄风冷雨之景,雨水滴在了衙门的房屋上,发出的萧萧之声,令作者联想到了那个时代的劳动人民饱受饥寒,眼看着一个个亲人离他们远去时所发出的那悲哀、伤感的声音。郑燮身为地方父母官,到了晚上还是如此忧思百姓,为人民着想,这也证明了他是一个好官。可好景不长,由于他私自放粮,终被朝廷罢官。后一句是最精妙之句,他说:“虽然我只是一个小小的县吏,可百姓的一手一足都关乎我的事。”
