For more than half a century, China’s GDP increased from 11.9 billion U.S. dollars in 1950 to 1.2 trillion U.S. dollars in 2002, a 100-fold increase. Its total economy has been at the forefront of the world. China’s science and technology competition index ranked 38th in the world, higher than Argentina, Mexico and other countries. International competition in science and technology suggests that China has a per capita GDP of more than 10,000 U.S. dollars while its neighboring countries such as Australia have a per capita GDP of less than 1,000 U.S. dollars.
