The basic premise of plate tectonics is that the rigid lithospheric plate formed on the mid-ocean ridge floats above the more deformable asthenosphere [1]. The exact nature of the asthenosphere remains controversial. The mechanical model predicts a clear and distinct lithosphere - asthenosphere boundary (LAB), but the boundary derived by traditional seismology is rather ambiguous.
