In mid-April 2009, the National Bureau of Statistics of China released the first quarter national economic performance data. Affected by the international financial crisis, China’s GDP grew 6.1% in the first quarter, while its foreign trade dropped sharply. Its total import and export volume reached 428.7 billion U.S. dollars, down 24.9% over the same period of last year. As the largest shipping nation in the world, more than 90% of China’s foreign trade relies on shipping. Therefore, the negative impact of the financial crisis on domestic shipping is even more pronounced. In the current situation, how to deal with the crisis of water transport development in our country? With these problems, our correspondents interviewed Mr. Hu Pingxian, president of the Institute of Water Transport Research of the Ministry of Communications.
