Following the Trans-Siberian Railway, a second continental railway across Europe and Asia with a total length of 18000km was formally established on September 24, 1991, at the Sino-Soviet border in Alashankou, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Earlier on September 4, the “Orient Express” temporary train arriving from Beijing had arrived at the Alashankou Station. About 100 Silk Road tourists traveled to the Soviet Union to continue moving forward. As early as July 20, the first train has crossed the border.
