Objective To evaluate the effectiveness of multisectoral cooperation in tuberculosis health promotion activities in rural areas. Methods Based on the project data, we conducted a random survey of villagers and patients in each of the provinces in the central and western parts of China, and conducted statistical analysis on relevant project data. Results The top 4 cooperating departments in the project area were women’s federations, educational commissions, propaganda departments and village committees. The project counties with 69.7%, 63.7%, 60.7% and 59.2% respectively agreed that the cooperation was effective. 86.1% of the households were publicized, and 78.8% of the villagers who received face-to-face publicity received the propaganda from the women’s federations cadres. The public awareness of the six tuberculosis-related issues among villagers who received publicity was higher than that of villagers who did not receive publicity, accounting for 67.8% and 52.3% respectively (P <0.01). A survey of patients’ medical practices found that 66.1% of active medical care providers were treated for publicity by village doctors or women’s federations. Conclusion The multi-sectoral cooperation in rural areas to promote health promotion activities has improved villagers’ TB awareness and promoted active medical treatment for suspicious persons, playing an important role in tuberculosis prevention and control.
