书香门第陈省身于1911年10月28日(农历九月初七)出生于中国浙江省嘉兴市下坊街(现建国路665号)一书香门第家庭,其父亲陈宝桢15岁中秀才,熟读孔孟之道,以《论语》中“吾日三省吾身”给儿子取名陈省身。1985年6月29日,陈省身偕夫人郑士宁回故乡嘉兴讲学,晚饭后由市侨办工作人员陈启文陪同游览运河景色,陈省身说:陈先生,我们陈姓是华夏百家姓中第五大姓,占汉族人口4．5％,现全世界陈姓人
