As a former Russian, later British diplomats in Russia and a liberal-loving scholar, no matter from what point of view, Berlin’s continuing interest in Russia is a matter of course. This collection, with the exception of the last underestimated Russian intellectual class published in the aftermath of the Soviet Union’s dissolution in 1990 (1990), is a more general critique of the class, while the rest concentrates on the dark ages of Russian history. During this period, Russia suffered Nazi Germany’s invasion and Stalin’s terrorist rule. There are countless great souls in Russia. The worst years can bring out the preciousness of these souls. The fifth column internal strangulation, not only directly damaged these souls, but also destroyed their habitat of soil.
