The occurrence of initial fires on biogas, coal dust, and air mixtures has a prominent, and actually important, characteristic. Even at best explosive concentrations and sources of ignition that have energies well above the minimum ignition energy, the initial ignition may not occur. For example, when trying to ignite a biogas air mixture of 8.5% of the optimum concentration with a source of energy of 20 mJ (100 times the minimum ignition energy), not every initial ignition (explosion) will be caused. In 1000 such tests, only 100 fires (900 refuse) were caused.
