The researchers used microcalorimetry to determine the molar enthalpy of α-alumina dissolved in pure cryolite at 1290 ° K. In the case of infinite ethylene release, the enthalpy of the α-alumina dissolution is +257 kJ mol⁻¹. The enthalpy decreases rapidly with the increase of alumina content. When the concentration of alumina remains 5-12% by weight, the enthalpy value is constant (that is, h dissolves Al 2 O 3 = +146 kJ mol -1). The effect of fluoride additives was studied. The hypothesis of AlOF_3 ~ (2-) and AlOF_5 ~ (4-) ions in the cryolite-alumina mixture was proposed.
