作为空客与中国开展工业合作的典范项目,从2005年年底空客和国家发改委签订了合作谅解备忘录以后,2006年开始谈判,2007年开始建设,2008年8月18日开始着手总装第一架飞机,自2008年9月28日投产,至今空客天津总装线已经正式投入运营五年。这五年当中,天津市所收获的不仅仅是一条飞机总装线,围绕着空客天津总装线,带动了一批航空工业的产业链落户到天津;与此同时,空客在中国市场也收获颇丰。
