A close correlation was found between the number of smokers and low birth weight and the incidence of preterm birth, as well as certain neonatal and obstetric complications. There is an interrelationship between the effects of such smoking on all ethnic groups. But the blacks are worse. Babies born more than 20 black smokers who smoke cigarettes a day, 24% of those weighing <2350 g, are three times as likely to give birth to the same weight babies born to non-smokers. Premature babies born to more than 20 black smokers daily smoke more than 1.5 times as often as non-smokers, from 7% to 17%. The corresponding increase in white numbers, both doubled, that of low birth weight, since 45.
