Objective To understand the health effects of styrene on workers through the working environment and health survey of styrene workers. Methods One hundred and sixty-six styrene paste producers were selected as the observation group and 149 non-paste manufacturers as the control group. The health effects of styrene on workers were analyzed by on-site and individual testing, workers’ health survey and physical examination. Results The concentration of paste-making area in working environment of rail-bound carcass workers was (111.62 ± 53.95) mg / m3 and that of non-paste area was 1.89 ± 0.67 mg / m3, the difference was statistically significant (χ2 = 12.862, P <0.01). The incidences of cold, dizziness, cough, abdominal pain and diarrhea and skin lesions in styrene workers were higher than those in the control group (P <0.01 or P <0.05). CONCLUSIONS The health conditions of workers in styrenic railroad cars are not optimistic. The survey subjects are younger and the contact life is shorter, and the influence of styrene on the body remains to be observed.
