Question 5 Is visual media more conducive to students’ creative thinking? According to a large number of studies in this area, the answer is no. However, the conversation with famous artists, writers and scientists shows that brain imaging is crucial for creative thinking. For example, Albert Einstein once remarked that he had realized his theory of relativity while imagining himself traveling to the moon by a Vienna cable car. He recalled how he was surprised to find that the cable car had become narrower as the cable car approached the speed of light and that the time in the car had become slower relative to the local time in Vienna. A similar description does inspire our imagination, enabling us to look forward to the ability to visualize. Visualization may actually help generate creative thinking (especially for knowledgeable scientists or accomplished artists), but so far there is no evidence that visual media can enhance the brain’s imagination. In fact, there are examples that show that people do not have to have a rich visual imagination can produce the most creative thinking. Xu
