In the recent five or six years, people have a great interest in beta-lactam antibiotics again. The main reason is the use of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) electrophoresis to identify bacterial membrane components - penicillin binding protein. They bind to radioactive penicillins and are probably the “biochemical targets” for penicillin to act on bacterial cells.
