1918年6月,毛泽东从湖南省立第一师范学校毕业。其时,杨昌济已调北京大学哲学系任教,全家也迁往北京。杨昌济十分关心毛泽东等人的前途,写信给毛泽东,希望他响应北京大学校长蔡元培等的号召,立即组织新民学会会员赴法勤工俭学。不久,毛泽东起草了一个湖南青年留法勤工俭学计划,交有关方面协调。为解决赴法的路费问题,毛泽东经杨昌济介绍求助于国民政府教育总长章士钊。章士钊通过多方努力,筹到经费两万元,使得新民学会赴法留学的会员得以成行。
