真空炭还原法生产金属铬的目的是为了节约战略物资——铝和硝石、降低生产成本及解决新工艺流程中氢氧化铬分解焙烧工艺,提高铬回收率而进行的一项生产金属铬的新工艺的试验。1970年11月根据冶金部(70)冶钢字518号文件精神,在北京铁合金厂进行了真空炭还原法生产金属铬试验。分别用湿氢氧化铬,高温煅烧的氧化铬和用经400℃低温分解后的半氧化铬加炭在真空炉中还原,制出化学成份接近部颁标准的金属铬,进行了阶段总结。当时由于缺乏熔化手段,而将试验停下来。
