对历史汉字古文字到今文字进行定形聚合,《玉篇》不再仿效《说文》侧重进行结构类型的分析,这种功能定位是符合历史汉字发展实际的。《玉篇》测查研究存在几个层次的问题:有字位单位的确定问题,有文本内部的层次划分问题,有文献结构关系问题,有历代整理加工问题。揭示字位字形关系也就是异体字在某个阶段字量中所占的比例,可以用字位与字形总量比例来反映。这个比例关系,用字位跟字形总量比值来加以体现,即位形比=字位数÷字形总量×100%。如果考虑到宋本《玉篇》处于字头地位的层次上也存在异体字,可以认为从《说文》到《玉篇》,字位与字形基本比例关系是大致保持不变的。在原本《玉篇》即六朝《玉篇》不完整的情况下,对照《篆隶万象名义》,可以大致反映原本《玉篇》基本面貌;又由于《篆隶万象名义》是唐代的仿制,两者的对照,可以反映宋人没有增字改动的《玉篇》面貌;如果将上述两个层次的文献结构基本区分开来,也就大体分出宋人《大广益会玉篇》增字的情况。这样几个层次大致清楚了,有关《玉篇》文本结构关系也就基本明确了。在各个层次的文献结构对照中,可以反映《玉篇》在古文字的传承和定形方面的意义,以及在这个定形化过程中所造成的损失程度。
