莫言小说《蛙》在故事题材上的拓荒性开掘和叙述形式上的复古式实验,都不是简单的标新立异,而是蕴含着深广的叙事伦理内涵。小说通过姑姑历时性的身份变更和其他人物共时性的关系结构所呈现出来的故事伦理,远远超越了单纯生育政治的探讨,而具有了关怀整体存在及其道德困境的哲学高度。在叙述伦理上则通过书信体叙事和在小说中揉进戏剧的跨文体方式,巧妙表达出了罪感、忏悔及其救赎的内在关系,表现出一个有良知的作家对当代中国伦理问题复杂性的深刻体认和对现代性伦理困境及其救赎可能的独到思考。
