A novel fiber optic oil leakage sensor based on Brillouin Optical Time Domain Analysis (BOTDA) was developed to detect small-scale oil spills at min level, which is mainly used for real-time oil spill monitoring in long-distance oil pipelines and oil depots . By simulating the transport status of the oil pipeline, the optical fiber is embedded in a special oil-sensitive material and laid along the oil pipeline. The BOTDA instrument real-time monitors the Brillouin frequency shift of the optical fiber to quickly find and locate the oil spill. The experiment proves the feasibility of this technique and accurately locates a small-scale oil spill within 10 minutes. The DiTeStSTA-R series BOTDA instrument is used to achieve 0.1m positioning accuracy on a 1.7km sensing fiber.
