Objective To investigate the relationship between the total lymphocyte count of peripheral blood and the clinical stages of gastric cancer and to analyze the changes of immune function in patients with different stages of gastric cancer. Methods A total of 268 patients with gastric cancer from January 2010 to January 2014 were retrospectively analyzed. The correlation between lymphocyte count and different clinical stages of gastric cancer was analyzed retrospectively. The difference of immune function between patients with different pathological stages was analyzed. Results There were significant differences in total lymph node counts between gastric cancer patients with different pathological stages (P <0.05), in which most patients with gastric cancer had decreased total lymphocyte count, especially in stage Ⅱ, Ⅲ and Ⅳ. In the correlation analysis of total peripheral blood lymphocyte count and clinical stage, there was a negative correlation between TLC and clinical stage (P <0.05). Conclusion The immune function of gastric cancer patients is lower than that of normal people. The more the clinical stage, the lower the immune function. The clinical detection of total lymphocyte count changes can quickly evaluate the immune function of gastric cancer patients, clinical diagnosis and treatment of gastric cancer patients and provide some clinical guidance.
