DEC reduced the price of its commercial Venturis desktop PCs by using cheaper, non-Intel processor products. DEC will launch two new models called Venturis FX-2 in early June, using AMD’s 166MHz and 200MHz K6 MMX processors, respectively. Although this is not the first time DEC has adopted AMD’s X86-compatible chips, this move has a deeper meaning at this time because the company currently has some legal disputes with Intel. DEC and Intel are currently conducting a legal war on illegal possession of confidential material. DEC accused Intel of stealing up to 10 Alpha patents, while Intel, through counterclaims, requested the court to force DEC to return the information necessary to achieve long-term system planning. Intel said its agreement with DEC to provide processors will expire in the third quarter of this year. The DEC categorically denied this statement. DEC officials said that the main purpose of DEC’s use of AMD processors is not to maintain a stable processor source, but mainly because of lower system prices while maintaining competitive performance.
