This study provides a methodological description of a project that uses mobile breast X-ray screening in rural Australia, evaluates the benefits using the travel cost method, and presents the preliminary results of economic studies. Because mammography is a “binary commodity,” traditional welfare analysis methods must be modified to use discrete selection models to assess screening needs. The results indicate that the level of benefit is related to the distance from township to the nearest fixed screening point. Of the ten townships studied, the benefit of using flow-through screening would outweigh the costs if the distance between a township and a screening site exceeded 29 km, ie screening was economically viable
