该所从事遥感研究的部门是于1978年创建的寒区遥感应用研究室,主要任务是利用遥感资料研究我国冰川、冻土和积雪的分布、数量及动态变化。该室在国内率先应用气象卫星和陆地卫星遥感资料监测我国东北及青藏高原大范围的冬、春积雪变化及融雪径流预报,并在黄河上游和祁连山、黑河等地推广应用,取得了明显的社会和经济效益。同时还深入开展了冰川、积雪和冻土的波谱特性研究。曾参加我院组织的腾冲、二滩及宁芜地区的航空遥感试验。
