It is well known that the vast majority of Vibrio parahaemolyticus isolated from patients exhibit hemolysis in human heart infusion broth agar containing human erythrocytes. However, most of the strains isolated from the environment do not hemolysis. This phenomenon is believed to be a very important feature in the diagnosis of food poisoning caused by V. parahaemolyticus, known as the Kanagawa phenomenon.
