In 2012, the “+40 m” and “-40 m” lithographs were created, bringing Tan Ping into the conceptual art field. “+40 m ” is a work by Tan Ping created exclusively for the Chinese Art Museum’s Grand Hall, consisting of a single thread. This 40-meter-long line is said to have been made by Tan Ping on a wooden board. A knife here is similar to a painting Shi Tao said. It does not refer to the physical knife, but refers to breath through the knife. It is a courageous decision to show only one line in the grand hall of the China Art Museum, which is regarded as an art hall. Perhaps we can think of it as the best interpretation of Shi Tao’s theory of painting, and all Chinese painting can be said to be the footnote of a painting theory. Therefore, this line is entirely deserved to be exhibited in the hall. However, I prefer to think of it as a work of contemporary concept rather than an annotation of the Chinese traditional art theory, especially when we interpret “+40 m” and “-40 m” together That’s it.
