Due to the small number of small cell lung cancer (SCLC) patients undergoing surgery, the difficulty of obtaining tumor samples greatly limits the study of SCLC biomarkers by tumor tissue. With the development of accurate detection technology, “liquid biopsy” has brought hope for the biomarker research of SCLC. As a liquid sample that can replace tumor tissue, circulating tumor cells (CTCs) appear abundantly in the peripheral blood of SCLC patients at high frequency. In recent years, a number of studies have been conducted on CTCs in patients with SCLC. It is found that CTCs are of great significance for the diagnosis and staging of SCLC, monitoring the recurrence and metastasis, assessing the curative effect, prognosis and individualized treatment. This article reviews the CTCs detection in SCLC, clinical application and exploration of individualized treatment.
