Objective To investigate the possible role and significance of Fas, FasL and TRAIL-mediated apoptosis in the pathogenesis of genital warts. Methods The expression of Fas, FasL and TRAIL in condyloma acuminatum lesions was detected by immunohistochemistry. Results All samples of condyloma acuminatum (100%) had Fas positive, 23 cases (76.7%) had FasL positive and 21 cases (70%) had TRAIL positive. The distribution of the three was basically the same and the normal epidermis was not expressed. The expressions of FasL and TRAIL were negatively correlated with infiltration of dermal mononuclear cells (r = -0.506 and r = -0.450, P <0.05). Conclusions The expression of Fas, FasL and TRAIL in condyloma acuminatum is abnormal, and the expression of FasL and TRAIL affects the local immune response. The uncontrolled apoptosis may be involved in the condyloma acuminatum and cause recurrence.
