宜都市聂家河镇丁家坪村方园几十里传颂着一个动人的故事:市人大代表、村卫生室48岁的乡村女医师、共产党员胡延兰,17年如一日,坚持护理本村精神病人尤清旺。该村二组农民尤清旺,1981年突发精神分裂症,到几家医院治疗后仍经常复发。1983年胡延兰对村支书说:“医生的天职是救死扶伤,见本村的精神病人不救,怎谈得上为人民服务?请将尤清旺母子俩作为我的‘联系户’吧!”村支书一听非常高兴,当场就同意了她的请求。任务是自己讨来的,但要完成这一任务,困难确实很多:与精神病人接触,可能要挨打;自己是女性,怕他发病后乱来;他家有老母,生活困难;精神病很难
