不论是在干旱、半干旱气候带,还是在湿润、半湿润气候带的河谷潜水均有极大的开采价值。但河谷潜水的开采量并不限于天然补给量,而且还包括在开采条件下的补给量。所以,河谷潜水的开采量要大大超过其天然补给量。例如,兰州盆地黄河河谷潜水目前的开采量已数倍于天然补给量;有的资料也表明,在一些小河谷,一口井的开采量甚至超过天然补给量;还有些实际开采量已超过天然补给量的几十倍,甚至上百倍。由此可知,人工开采量与天然补给量之比远远超过1,这是河谷潜水不同于其它潜水类型的水资源特征。
