Tokyo, January 11, 1980 Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare today announced that hydrogen peroxide, a chemical used in disinfection and food coloring, has been tested to be carcinogenic. The Ministry of Health also decided to require Japanese food processors not to use such food additives anymore. After announcing the above decision, Kotai Sakaki, director of the Ministry of Health and Environment, Ministry of Health, told reporters that after two years of experiments in mice, scientists found that hydrogen peroxide has a very weak carcinogenic effect. Some mice developed signs of duodenal cancer in the experiment. However, no signs have been shown so far in the rats used in the same experiment.
