裴斯泰罗齐认为儿童教育非常重要,母亲在儿童教育过程扮演重要角色。儿童的学习应该从最简单的、能为儿童所理解和接受的要素开始,逐步过渡到较为复杂的要素,以促进儿童各种潜能的和谐发展。德育的基础是母爱,道德精神的核心是热爱他人,直至对上帝的挚爱,要使道德力量与宗教感情融汇起来;体育的要素是身体各关节的活动,应该从锻炼儿童关节活动开始,逐步扩展为站、行、跑、跳、掷、摇、角力等各种活动能力;儿童智育的最初萌芽是对事物的感觉与观察能力,应从儿童眼前事物最基本、最简单的外部特征开始,即数目、形状和名称相统一。儿童认识这三个要素的相应能力是计算、测量和表达,培养这三种能力的是算术、几何和语文三门学科。
