It is estimated that the market of carbon fiber will be about 2 billion U.S. dollars in 2010, and the output will be 36,300 tons. The main challenge for the carbon fiber manufacturing industry is cost-efficient production. As costs go down, their use will increase drastically. The ability to produce carbon fibers directly from PBO fibers eliminates the need for costly and time-consuming fiber stabilization steps, which means lower costs. Carbonization and graphitization of PBO fibers yield high-quality carbon fibers with both very good thermal and mechanical properties. In contrast to the production of carbon fibers from other precursors, there is a very interesting long-range orderly formation. This results in excellent lattice-based properties and lower resistivity.
