Since 1978 China has pursued a strategy of gradual transition from a centrally planed economy to a market-based economy coupled with an ‘open door' policy that involved substantial liberalization of its international trade and investment regime.This strategy has delivered sustained and rapid economic growth averaging to 10% per annum between 1978 and 2008 and has realised an increase of GDP per capita by 15-fold from around US $ 220 to US $ 3400.China ranked the second largest economy in the world at present.With the accelerated economic and social developments,China is poised to play a vital role in every sphere of international relations while positioning herself as a centre of growth and the South Asian countries can benefit for mutual progress.South Asia and China consisted of 45% of the world population with a growing market for goods and services due to ever-increasing per capita income in the region.An effective co-operation in the field of trade,investment and the sphere of economic relations would certainly earn mutual benefits for all stakeholders particularly with the fast emerging economies such as India and China along with other members of the South Asian region who are also keen in joining the development drive through the unique competitive advantages available to each and every member.The co-operation between South Asia and China would certainly facilitate to create peaceful security and political environment in the region which is sine-quo-non for the stable relations among the members of both regions.
