Unisys Aerospace is investigating the customer’s interest in a new digital speed and acceleration sensor that it has developed for inertial measurement devices. Sensors that are still in the early stages of development use Coriolis acceleration to measure velocity. Each silicon-based Coriolis sensor, which is micromachined called a FIX (mini) Sciras, contains two accelerometers as part of a monolithic structure that senses Coriolis acceleration at a constant frequency amplitude jitter. The three sensors are arranged orthogonally to accurately measure the triaxial linear acceleration and angular velocity. According to the company, the sensor and conversion accuracy is a few degrees per hour if using a direct digital interface.
