Nuclear physicist, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chinese Academy of Engineering. Born in December 1924 in Yichang, Hubei Province, he graduated from the Department of Physics of Southwest United University in 1945 and received a Ph.D. in nuclear physics from the University of Michigan in 1948. He has successively held the posts of Director of National Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, President of China Association for Science and Technology, Dean of Chinese Academy of Engineering, President of China Council for the Promotion of International Peace and Director of Science and Technology Commission of PLA General Armament Department.
