Neuropeptide Y (NPY) is a 36 amino acid peptide originally isolated from porcine brain and found to have high concentrations in rat hypothalamus and other brain regions. Immunocytochemistry demonstrated that NPY-like immunoreactive neurons had overlapping distributions with neurons that asked for luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) in the brain. Further data confirm that NPY may coexist with adrenergic neurotransmitters within the peripheral and central neurons and within adrenal medulla cells. It is known that norepinephrine and epinephrine are important regulators of the release of luteinizing hormone (LH). However, the effect of NPY on LH release is not clear. Kalra and other rats from the intraventricular administration of NPY, which was observed.
