Grindell is a professor of anthropology at Florida State University. Lodz is a graduate student at the University of London’s School of Economics and Political Science. In this essay, they have done a groundbreaking work in an attempt to compare journalism and anthropology with one another for cross-cutting research. They think there are many similarities between journalist work and anthropologist research, and journalists and journalism researchers can improve their work by drawing on anthropological research. Likewise, an anthropologist can learn a lot from journalists. Grindel hosted a seminar in June 1985 to examine the role of anthropological research skills in recognizing and reporting on modern civilization. The symposium was funded by the Florida Foundation. Some journalists from Florida, two other anthropologists, three journalism professors, two writing faculty professors and several students attended the conference. After the meeting, Grindel wrote this essay and published it on the 1987 Winter Journal of the News Educators.
