目前所知的古代印度舍利容器数量较大,而且形制较有特点。从其质地而言,有陶、滑石、水晶、冻石、片岩,这类质地的舍利容器一般作为外重容器使用。也有金、银、铜、玻璃等质地,这类质地的舍利容器中仅个别的用作外重容器,其余大部分都用作安置舍利的内重容器。还有一些质地较为特殊者如象牙舍利容器。从古印度舍利容器的形制来看,主要有覆钵塔形、罐形、圆筒形、禽鸟形等几类。从质地与形制等方面对这些古印度舍利容器介绍,对于深入认识中国古代的舍利容器自身到底有什么特殊之处,有很大帮助。同时,从有些古印度的舍利容器中残留的舍利和供养品,也可以看到中国古代瘗埋的舍利、供养品与它们之间存在密切的关系。
The ancient Indian relic containers known to date are larger in size and more in shape.
