Objective: To investigate the correlation between lectin-induced tumor cell agglutination and metastatic potential. Method: The minimum lectin concentration required for complete agglutination of cells was determined in vitro. RESULTS: MMA, DSA, WGA, L-PHA, and ConA all induced agglutination of human nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells, but the concentrations were different, and there was a difference between the lowest concentration of agglutinin-induced agglutination of different metastatic potential tumor cells (P <0.05). E-PHA also induced agglutination of tumor cells with different metastatic potentials, but there was no difference in lectin concentrations (P>0.05). CONCLUSION: The cell agglutination and metastatic potential induced by MMA, DSA, WGA, and L-PHA are positively correlated; conA-induced negative correlation with metastatic potential; E-PHA-induced metastasis is not related to metastatic potential. The results of this study may contribute to the diagnosis and prognosis of tumor progression and further discussion of molecular mechanisms of tumor metastasis.
