《水浒传》评点中汇集了大量有关叙事文法的论述,集中体现于回前评、回后评、眉批、旁批、夹批之中。这些评点持续讨论了叙事成规,特别是叙事作品内部的构造关系和叙事者的叙述策略。“起承转合”、“结穴发脉”、“关锁照应”等中国式的论述方式均指向叙事的严整。同时,评点又指出小说叙事必须于神变中求严整,追求技巧与意趣、法度与神韵的融合。小说评点的文法理论源自六朝文论和诗文技法研究,受到了明清时期社会语境和话语语境的影响。在《水浒传》各家评点中,金圣叹从理论的角度总结了叙事文法。
