20世纪20年代李白诗歌的第一个英译集《李白诗集》出版后,闻一多与译者小畑熏良在《晨报副刊》上展开了一场论争。闻一多以忠实为标准,从“怎么译”的角度对译诗集的原作选择、翻译方法等提出质疑,小畑熏良从“为什么这么译”的角度对译本进行说明,指出了文本在异域文化中变异的必要性。小畑的回应实现了理论视角从文本到文化、从原语中心到译入语中心的转变,准确地把握了译本意义随文化语境的迁移而变的规律,在翻译理论史上有独特的价值。尽管闻一多熟知类似翻译史实,但论战发起者的身份、诗歌技艺偏好、对美国社会的拒斥,让他的观察没能达到应有的深度。
After the publication of Li Bai’s poetry, the first English translation of Li Bai’s poetry in the 1920s, Wen Yiduo held a debate with Translator Xiao Liangyu on Morning Supplement. Wen Yiduo questioned the choice of original works and translation methods of translation poems from the perspective of “how to translate”. Wen Xiaoliang explained the translation from the perspective of “why translation” and pointed out Necessity of Text Variation in Foreign Culture. Xiaobo’s response has realized the change of the theoretical perspective from text to culture, from the center of the primitive to the center of the translated Chinese, and accurately grasped the regularity that the meaning of the translated text changed with the migration of cultural context. It has unique value in the history of translation theory. Although Wen Yiduo is familiar with the similar translation facts, his identity as an initiator, his preference for poetry and his rejection of American society make his observations fail to reach the depths required.
