Douglas College is a community college in Vancouver. Its English teaching for international students is its signature program. The advantage is that the vast majority of teachers have Masters and PhDs specializing in English as a Second Language (ESL). For international students, the college has short courses in summer to provide intensive training for students’ listening, speaking, reading and writing. If passed the school’s four-level assessment, you can enter the formal course of study. Last summer, I was fortunate enough to attend such a six-week ESL program, where more than 70 participants from around the world were high school graduates, college students and new immigrants.
