兖矿集团是全国100家现代企业制度试点和120家企业集团试点单位。为适应市场经济发展的需要,兖矿集团自1996年开始进行现代企业制度改革试点,建立了与现代企业制度相配套的劳动人事、工资分配制度,发挥了工资分配的杠杆作用和激励作用,充分调动了经营者和广大职工的积极性和主动性,企业经济效益稳步提高,销售收入、利润、出口煤量、综采单产、原煤效率等多项指标连续多年居行业第一。1999年,在煤炭市场持续疲软,整个煤炭行业亏损,企业经营十分困难的情况下,兖矿集团实现销售收入74.12亿元,利税12.5亿元,职工工资收入稳定增长。兖矿集团之所以能够列在全国煤炭行业领头羊的位置,得益于企业勇于改革、开拓创新,得益于企业内部分配制度改革逐步深化。在搞活企业内部工资分配方面,兖矿集团的主要做法是:
