“忆语”是一种融悼亡、自传、追忆为一体的散文体式。它滥觞于清初名士冒襄为悼亡其妾董小宛所作的《影梅庵忆语》,是书以一种较少拘束的散文笔调,追忆两人的爱情悲欢与生活细节,情致深婉,哀感顽艳,“一时名士,吴园次以下,无不赋诗以赠”(查为仁《莲坡诗话》)。此后,陈裴之《香畹楼忆语》、蒋坦《秋灯琐忆》、王韬《眉珠庵忆语》、王蕴章《菊影楼话堕》等类似作品不断出现,成为明清以来江南文学一道亮丽的风景线。而陈宗蕃为其亡妻撰写的《傫然室忆语》,则是这道风景线上最后一个值得回味之处。
